Mineral wax was discovered at Monte Falò, an elevation to the est of Castello Samoggia, together with a small amount of petroleum (Bombicci, 1876, 1877, 1881 and 1882; Casali, 1877; Mattei, 1892). In 1892, exploration works for oil were performed on the west slope of Monte Falò, near the house known as Dogana. Small amounts of mineral wax and petroleum were recovered from a well 15 m deep and some short galleries and trenches. An exploration well 13 m deep, drilled at the beginning of the 20th century, encountered oil-bearing clays, while a borehole 475 m deep mainly encounterd natural gas pools.
This mineral wax, named "hatchettine" or "ozocherite" by Bombicci and "ozokerite" by Mattei, appears as white to yellowish, translucent, soft, easily fusible clots, lamellar or scaly aggregates, and films within the clayey marl layers or adhering to limestone blocks. According to Bombicci (1877), also petroleum, which shows a dark orange-yellow colour with green hues, contains a considerable amount of dissolved wax and it becomes viscous, whitish, and almost dull during the cold winter days.
Notes:
1) On 1 January 2014 the former municipality of Savigno, in which territory Monte Falò was included, together with those of Bazzano, Castello di Serravalle, Crespellano, and Monteveglio became part of the new municipality of Valsamoggia.
2) The occurrence of surface hydrocarbons and their occasional combustion is at the origin of the name Monte Falò (literally Mount Bonfire).
