This small mine worked three NE-trending lodes, known as North Lode, Main Lode and South Lode, below Trevoole hamlet. Main Lode was opened up by a series of shafts over a distance of about 450 yards along its strike, most of which are now obscured. The grid reference marks an engine house ruin just northeast of Trevoole hamlet; a large shaft burrow is located in an adjacent field.
From 1827 to 1829, Trevoole Mine produced 1,548 tons of copper ore. From 1856 to 1862, another 3,400 tons of 4.5% copper ore and some black tin were raised. The mine stopped work in 1841, but was re-worked from 1856 to 1864. In 1886-1887, it was re-opened in an unsuccesful attempt to locate the western extension of the Great Flat Lode, which was believed to pass through the sett.
NOTE: While Dines and Hamilton Jenkin agree in their identification of Trevoole Mine, the latter equates West Wheal Grenville with Gernick Mine, which is located a little further south. The corrigenda to the 1988 reprint of Dines state, that it was Trevoole Mine which was generally known as West Wheal Grenville, but that this name was also adopted by Wheal Top and Gernick Mine when they were re-started in 1851.
