The cliffs of the Nazaré lighthouse exhibit a succession of rocks which are about 90 million years old (Upper Cretaceous). These limestones correspond to the emersion of an ancient coastal area contemporaneous with changes in the local geography, relief and coastline. With the sea level lowering, the limestone entered into contact with the surface, and corrosion started originating caves and other cavities of the which the infilling is still visible today. At the same time volcanic activity occurred with the formation of lava flows and associated feeding dikes. These volcanic rocks outcrop near the Nazaré lighthouse.
