Numerous mineral-bearing outcrops on the mountains surrounding the glacial plain of Mussa Alp (Pian della Mussa).
In many mineral collections all over the world under the name of Mussa Alp or Pian della Mussa are recorded specimens of garnet, diopside, and vesuvianite from the classic rodingite dykes of Testa Ciarva and Roch Neir (located to the north and south of the plain, respectively). Sometimes, in ancient literature and mineral collections this locality is also written as La Mussa or Lamussa, as for instance in Borson (1830).
Costanzo Benedetto Bonvicino, who Frenchified his surname to "Bonvoisin" in his publications, described under the name of “mussite” a mineral from Roch Neir in the form of fasciculated crystal aggregates, greyish to whitish to green in colour. He also described as “alalite” a mineral from Testa Ciarva in the form of transparent, colourless to whitish to greenish prismatic crystals (Bonvoisin, 1806). In 1806 René-Just Haüy demonstrated that the minerals described by Bonvoisin are varieties of a unique mineral species, that he named diopside (Tonnelier, 1806 and 1809). Thus, Roch Neir and Testa Ciarva at Pian della Mussa (Balme) are the type localities for diopside (Ciriotti et al., 2009). On the contrary, the information that Becchi delle Curbassere (Ala di Stura) [see http://www.mindat.org/loc-60196.html] is another of the type localities for diopside is unfounded, probably due to erroneous interpretations of the original literature.
