The joint venture mining concessions are located to the west of Thurein-taung. Blue sapphires are found in a primary deposit of alkali-feldspar syenite pegmatite rock. Large blue and yellow sapphires and smaller numbers of rubies and spinels, small in size, are found in a secondary deposit as detritus, in typical loos (loo-dwin) among the numerous caves noted in the area. Gem production in 2000 was minimal. In 2005 a skarn deposit was discovered where baddeleyite, painite, rutile and other minerals were found. - Ted Themelis (2008) Gems and Mines of Mogok

The mine is located just below the summit of Myan-gyi Taung, Southwest of Thurein Taung and part of the same hill range. For practical reasons, no separation between Thurein Taung and Myan-gyi Taung has been carried out.

NOTE: The former locality "Kyauk Tha Mt." has been included here because Kyauk Tha Mt. does not exist. It was a misinterpretation of "Kyauk Tha village", which itself was a misnomer for Kyauk Pya village. Although "Tha-gyi-loo" might also have been a possibility, the mineral composition fitted much better with Myan-gyi Mine.
