Volcanic island extends over 9 x 5 km, but the underlying volcanic edifice is c. 150 x 100 km in extent. It lies within a coral reef, the lagoon of which varies from 1 to 5 km in width and is occupied by many swamps, sand islands and exposed coral (Brousse et al. 1980).
