The Mica King South pegmatite is south of the Mica King pegmatite by 200 metres, and was thought to contain the largest schorl crystals of any deposit in the Gascoyne Region. It is a pegmatite of very coarse grained microcline-plagioclase-quartz-muscovite with abundant schorl. Species found include albite, apatite, beryl, bismuthinite, bismuthite, microcline, muscovite, quartz.
When R.C. Wilson visited in 1927 mining was already taking place with two shafts 10 and 3.6m deep. They were after mica but no commercial deposits were encountered. Schorl crystals are occassionally seen on the market from this location but little is known. A Martin and Miller are noted undertaking later excavations. It is possible the crystals come from Frank Soklich who was active in the 1970's at the nearby dravite mines. 1.3t of dravite sold as schorl have come from the deposit.
The shafts can still be seen, with lumps of schorl looking like black coal lying around.
There has been some debate over whether the schorl is black dravite, but has yet to be confirmed.
