A former Au-Ag-Cu-Pb-Zn occurrence/mine located in the SW¼NW¼NW¼ sec. 28, T58S, R74W, Seward Meridian, 2.3 miles W of Unga, on patented (private) land and/or Bureau of Land Management administered land. Owned and operated by the Alaska Apollo Resources, Inc. (AARI) (100%), Alaska (1987). Owned and operated by Daugherty Petroleum Inc. (Subsidiary of AARI) (100%), Alaska (1997).

Discovered in 1891 with peak output from between 1891 and 1904. The property is comprised of 15 patented lode claims and 1 patented mill claim. 19 unpatented lode claims were purchased by Alaska Apollo Gold Mines, Ltd. in 1986, including the Apollo, Siktka and Shumagin mines. Production resumed in 1908 and small-scale production until WWII. Extensive exploration occurred from 1980 to 1986 by Alaska Apollo Gold Mines, Ltd. Limited modern data are available. The property is a small Au producer, as of Randol 1996/97. Possibly a former past producer brought back into production. The stated USGS MRDS database accuracy for this locality is 100 meters.

Mineralization is a deposit hosted in propylitized andesite and dacite. The ore body strikes N20E, and forms a shoot that pitches northward to a depth of 800 feet, and comes to the surface at 600 feet of elevation to the S. It is 3 meters thick, 260 meters wide (5-40 feet ??) and 950 meters long, covering 15 HA. Ore body No. 1 is a tabular fissure vein; ore body No. 2 is a shear zone and ore body No. 3 is stockwork. The primary mode of origin was hydrothermal activity. Primary ore control was fracturing and the secondary control was igneous activity. Wallrock alteration is intense (propylitic). The ore is a reticulated network of mineralized fractures in intensely altered (propylitized) Tertiary andesite and dacite containing free gold, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and native copper in a gangue of quartz and subordinate calcite and orthoclase. Country rock is mineralized to a certain extent on either side of the main ore body, which haas been mined out. Local alteration is propylitization. Local rocks include Popof volcanic rocks, only in Shumagin Islands = Meshik.

Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall depth of 243.84 meters and an overall length of 1,828.8 meters. The underground workings are extensive with one tunnel more than 6,000 feet long. The Apollo No. 1 shaft was dewatered to 450 foot level in the winter of 1981-1982 by Alaska Apollo Gold Mines, Ltd. A 60-stamp mill was in operation in the 1890's and early 1900's.

Production statistics: Production statistics: 1891: 38 Troy ounces (1,182 grams) Au; 1892: 1,462 Troy ounces (45,473 grams) Au; 1893: 2,315 Troy ounces (72,005 grams) Au; 1894: 1,708 Troy ounces (53,125 grams) Au; 1895: 10,904 Troy ounces (339,152 grams) Au; 1896: 19,367 Troy ounces (602,381 grams) Au. Total production through 1959 reportedly was 107,900 Troy ounces Au.

Analytical data results: The main ore body averaged about 0.4 ounce/ton Au. (USGS OF 80-909).

Reserves and resources: Type: in-situ (estimate year = 1995): demonstrated reserves: 2,000,000 metric tons of ore with Au at 8.9 grams/metric ton; Ag at 30.8 grams/metric ton; Cu at 0.08 weight percent; Pb at 0.31 weight percent; and, Zn at 0.5 weight percent. Reserves could not be verified.
