Zeolites are abundant in the lowest flows of Miocene Grand Rhonde (16.5 mya) basalt of Columbia River Basalt Group exposed in tilted flows along the limb of a faulted anticline which up lifted the flows 2000 feet and in places tipped the flows up to 78 degrees. Several sites are found in the road cuts along Highway 193 on the north shore of the Snake River west of the Clarkston Bridge. The collecting sites are referred to by the mileage from the bridge (4.7 mile site). Moses is an abandoned railway stop that appears on most maps but in reality no longer exists. Clarkston is the nearest town. Zeolites were found in the road cuts by Lanny Ream in 1992. Erionite and normal clinoptilolite are common. Unusual wedge-shaped clinoptilolite is very scarce and needs more study. Unusual floors or platforms due to mineral settling by gravity that indicate horizontal at the time the minerals crystallized are seen in many of the cavities. Some of those platforms are tilted in relation to each other from a few to 45 degrees with each other. One chalcedony filled vesicle had 15 different tips in it. The relationship of up lifts of the fault which tilted the vesicles over a 15 million year period with the tilted platforms, seen in the vesicles, needs to be further studied. Collecting is still possible as long as you park off the black top and do not look like you are collecting when the state patrol passes by.
