Active basalt quarry at base of eastern flank of the volcano.
Known for fine olivine bombs and large anorthoclase xenocrysts.
Fumaroles and quartz-rich xenoliths also occur, but are rare.
The mineralogy has not been studied in detail yet, but mineralogical work is underway (B. Birch & U. Kolitsch).
Mt Shadwell Quarry is located in Ararat Road, Mortlake and is operated by the Moyne Shire Council.
The quarried aggregate is used for roadworks, dust for pipe bedding and coarse aggregate for filters and landscaping.
