The name "Mine Falls" derives from the lead and iron ore Native Americans were rumored to have mined from the islands below the falls prior to the 1680s. Later attempts to profit from these ores proved fruitless due to their small quantities and impurities.
Prior to the 1984 building of the Mine Falls hydro-electric power station at the site of the falls, a selection of minerals were collected from that area as well.
