The mining town of Paraburdoo provides accommodation for miners of the neighbouring mines.

The whole area around Paraburdoo comprises banded iron formation (BIF).

Paraburdoo also refers both to the mine of the same name. It is the local indigenous word for 'white cockatoo'.

The town was built by Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd in 1970 to service its new Paraburdoo Mine, 10 kilometres southwest of the town.

The mine opened in 1972. It is now owned by Rio Tinto, and one of the numerous iron ore mines that the company has in the Pilbara Region.

Paraburdoo was the birthplace of "Red Dog", possibly its most famous resident, and was made into a film.

Ore from Paraburdoo is railed through the mountains to Dampier. Six engines are used per train, which has 200 cars carrying 25,000 tonnes of iron ore.

The main mines in the area are Paraburdoo, East Range, and Channar, which follow the east-west Paraburdoo Ranges. The mines are south and south-east and southwest of the town, starting with Paraburdoo, then East Range and most south-easterly Channar, 22 kilometres from Paraburdoo.

The area sits on the southern flanks of the Hamersley Ranges.
