Summary of Mines Record Card

Copley Sh5409/Balcanoona Card No: 13 states;

Name: Balcanoona Mercury Prospect
alt Name: Moro Mine Area

7 ½ miles SW of Wertaloona Station

History: The mercury ore-mineral, cinnabar, was discovered in 1965 at the Moro Mine, by Kennecott Explorations (Aust.) Pty. Ltd.

No further testing of this mercury occurrence was made until May, 1968 when investigations were begun by the S.A. dept. of Mines.

Stream sediment sampling of streams draining across the Mt. John Fault Zone outlined 2 areas containing anomalous mercury. The soils in these area were sampled along E-W lines across the Fault to pinpoint the source (R.B. 68/6)

The 2 anomalous areas, the northern just south of Italowie Gorge and the southern, around Moro Mine were reserved form the Mining Act, and the results of the investigations of these areas are described by Leeson (RB. 70/60). Further anomalous areas were indicated along some of the major faults in the area in addition to the Mt. John Fault Zone. No extensive investigations were recommended foe the Northern Area. In the Southern Areas, further sampling and drilling were recommended by Leeson (1970)

Geology: Mercury mineralisation and relict (?) primary copper sulphides found in the fault adjacent to the camp (Brooks 1966b).

Grade: One sample showed 0.8% Hg in samples collected by Kennecott in 1965. Mercury values 10 to 100 times higher than what would be expected (Brooks 1966a p.7)
Specimens 5% Hg in pit; Pit average 400 p.p.m. Hg near Moro ruins in fault.

Note: while the Record of mines - Summary Card states 'Moro Mine Area' as an alternate name, it has been left out of the name thread, to help prevent confusion with the 'Moro Mine'.
