A copper deposit with supergene gold in highly argillized andesite. Located 6 km SW of Sierra Gorda and approximately 1 km SE off the Panamerican Highway, in a range of low hills.
Host rocks: Lower Cretaceous Quebrada Mala Formation — Porphyritic andesites (Williams, 1992)
Vein: 2-3 meters wide, strike N62° -75°E dip 85°-90°
Alteration: propylitic
Age of mineralization: 65-60 my
Minerals determined by PXRD at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York are as follows:
Sulfide zone: pyrite, galena, tetrahedrite, quartz, baryte
Chloride zone: saponite, paratacamite, boleite, pseudoboleite, cotunnite, goethite, hematite, gold, seeligerite, aragonite, anhydrite, unknown Pb-I-Cl
Sulfate zone: tamarugite, copiapite, ferricopiapite, metavoltine, metasideronatrite, ferrinatrite, kröhnkite, aubertite, anhydrite, gypsum
While atacamite was noted in earlier work, it was not found in any of the samples collected in 1985. Paratacamite was, however, ubiquitous.
DO NOT wash specimens from this mine, especially not ultrasonically, as the gold and some other minerals are attached to the matrix only with clay and will come off!
