Barrancas del Cobre (in English Copper Canyon) is an umbrella name given to an entire region of the Sierra Madre Occidental extending from central western Chihuahua into central western Durango. This region is characterized by a number of very deeply incised canyons cut through the mid-Tertiary Upper Volcanic Supergroup (characterized by thick rhyolite welded-ash-flow tuffs) into the Lower Tertiary to Upper Cretaceous Lower Volcanic Complex (characterized by a complex pile of slightly deformed andesitic volcanic materials and related intrusions). The terrain is precipitous with canyons cutting from about 3000m elevation to 600m elevation carved by the Urique, Batopilas, Fuerte and tributary rivers. The best known part of "Copper Canyon" is along the Rio Urique, which was chosen as the route for the Chihuahua to Pacific Railroad. This spectacular train route winds from the top of the Sierra along the canyon walls, eventually reaching the Pacific Coastal Plain above Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Mines are scattered throughout the region, most being high-grade epithermal gold-silver deposits (Palmarejo, Guazaparez, Carmen, Ocampo) "5-Element Veins (Batopilas, Morelos); skarns (Bolivar) and High-sulfidation Gold (Sauzal, Mulatos). There are also a number of optical calcite occurrences, the largest being near Areponapuchic on the Rio Urique.
