Coal Creek originates in Arizona, flows N into New Mexico, and continues NW into Arizona in the Big Lue Mountains. The entirety of Coal Creek within New Mexico is now within the Hell Hole Wilderness Study Area. Collecting on wilderness lands is prohibited. ---- Chet Lemanski.

A number of prospects exist all along the creek. The country rock consists primarily of Tertiary volcanics (lots of rhyolite, tuff, etc.) and mineralogy is generally what you would find in most New Mexico rhyolite flows. Gibbs (1992) lists pseudobrookite, titanite, hematite, tridymite, phlogopite, and hollandite in the older rhyolites and erionite-offretite, heulandite, mesolite(?), quartz, and calcite in the younger flows. He also states that mineralogy is sparsely distributed but locally abundant. If you can access a map of New Mexico, find Mule Creek Post Office in the far west end of Grant Co. and head west from there. ---- Don Saathoff
