The Mysore District is one of 8 districts in Mysore Division, which occupies roughly half the area of the former Mysore princely state, which had territory from neighboring states added to it in 1956 to form Mysore State, which in 1973 was renamed Karnataka State, which shares much of the territory of the slightly larger pre-1800 Kingdom of Mysore.

"If a specimen photo is submitted to Mindat and its original label says "Mysore District" then of course that should be retained. But if the label simply says "Mysore" there is no reason to assume it comes from the district (and not from the much larger division or indeed from the territories of the former princely or federal states). Most of the specimens will have been collected and labelled after 1973, but even so, a very loose interpretation of Mysore can be expected. Much of the ruby comes from small, clandestine operations in various locations in Karnataka. Simply labelling such a specimen "Mysore" is not really inaccurate, adds a bit of historical cachet, and shields the location's precise identity".
