A porphyry copper deposit explored since 1968.
Located in the Cordillera Central of northwestern Neuquén.
The Campana Mahuida project is located in the province of Neuquén, near the town of Loncopué, northeast of Cerro Tres Puntas. The region's potential wealth has been known since the end of the 19th century, when the governor of the then Neuquén National Territory (a legal form prior to provincialization), proposed to install the capital there.
In 1969, the region was mentioned in a law that entrusted the General Directorate of Military Manufacturing with the procedures for the exploration and exploitation of "deposits of copper, molybdenum and other first-class minerals."
In the text of this law, the surface area with potential mining resources of Campaña Mahuida was estimated at 225 km².
