The allophane forms a creamy white deposit in the stream, and next to waterfalls. The sources mainly focus on geochemical and structural aspects of the material using spectroscopy and electron microscopy.
The allophane is formed when high Co2 saturated water is lost downstream, with a corresponding rise in Ph.
Another allophane location is found nearby at the Mangaturuturu River, in similar circumstances.
The Silica Springs deposit can be reached by a 1 hour 15 minute walk from the Whakapapa village on the north-west slopes of Mount Ruapehu. The material is not really collectable as specimens, and is illegal regardless being in a national park.
