The island has an area of approximately 6 sq kilometres and is privately owned.
Pepin Island is 15 kilometres north of Nelson, and is connected to the mainland at Cable Bay by a short causeway. The island is owned by descendants of German business woman, Dr. Viola von Hohenzollern. There have been occasional public open days arranged.
The reference (Lauder, 1964) is a detailed article on the general geology of Pepin Island, rather than a specific specimen site. The abstract states the following.
Rock types found on the island include Echinus Granite, Platform Gneiss, and Fall Conglomerate of the Pepin Group. This is intruded by a plug, and radial dyke swarm of hornblende, and quartz-biotite andesite of the Palisade Andesite Formation.
The Tasman Group or Cable Granodiorite contains quartz, diorite, tonalite, and hornblende granodiorite, cross-cut by veins of augite lamprophyre, hornblende granite, hornblende granophyre, and granophyric hornblende pegmatite. Albite-epidote-quartz veins are common, and pyrite is noted.
