Evan's Pass Quarry
The rock of the Lyttelton volcano grades from basaltic andesite through olivine andesite to trachyte, with andesite being some 80% of the flows. Glen Coates found at least six cycles of fractionation, the alteration of magma composition as early-forming minerals such as olivine and pyroxenes dropped out; each cycle began with violent explosive eruptions and ended with trachyte lava flows. Most of the flows of andesite are of the aa type, of blocky material with a clinkery top. The flows vary in thickness from one to forty metres. The andesite has phenocrysts (visible crystals) of labradorite feldspar, augite and olivine, which has generally altered to iddingsite or chlorite serpentine. The trachyte has aegirine/augite, magnetite and biotite. The area studied has dykes in faces four and five, and a swarm on Battery Point that extends into the main quarry.
