The Östanmossa mine produced iron ore from a skarn in the period from 1859 to 1934. The mine is worked to a depth of 114.9m. The Östanmossa mine is a Bastnäs-type REE deposit, belonging to the subtype (2) of Sahlström (Norberg type) in that it is enriched in heavy REE (HREE), Y, Mg, Ca, and F. The REE deposits are hosted in skarns associated with marble horizons in a strongly Na, K, and/or Mg-altered, metavolcanic succession.

The Östanmossa deposit is the type locality for dollaseite-(Ce).
