This small abandoned gold mine is unusual in two respects. Located about 10 kilometres north-west of Lake Grace, it is in the middle of the wheatbelt, well west of the greenstone gold bearing belts further east in Western Australia. It also holds the rare phosphate species walentaite, found in only five locations worldwide, and the mine is Australia's only location for the species.
Gold was discovered in the area in 1957, and mining took place in the 1980's at two small open pits - the main pit at about 55 metres deep, and the smaller north pit 200 metres to the north-west at 20 metres deep. 55,000 ounces of gold was recovered at 2.8 g/t. Since this time several companies have explored the region, mainly to the north-west and south-east of the historic mines.
There is no access into north pit, and the mullock has been rehabilitated. The main pit is water filled, but there is a large dump showing granite infused with innumerable tiny almandine garnets. Walentaite is common also as dull yellow coverings across ironstone and quartz.
The deposit is found in an enclave of mafic granulite, which has been intruded by recrystallised lenocratic adamellite. The deposit consists of a surface enriched gold bearing quartz-sulphide lodes, dispersed across a broad surface zone, narrowing at depth.
