Banded iron formation (BIF), consisting of several stratiform layers that are concordant to the host amphibolite, micaschist and gneiss. Individual Fe layers are 30 to 50 m thick and up to 3 to 5 km long. The ores are mainly banded and are composed of an oxide facies, a silicate facies, and a carbonate facies. The host units are part of the Late Archean Wutai Group that is derived from mafic and felsic volcanic rock, sedimentary rock, and canbyite formation in a greenstone belt regionally metamorphosed to greenschist facies. In the area of the deposit is a group of similar, moderate to large Fe deposits that occur in a northeast-trending belt. The BIF also hosts gold ore bodies that are controlled by secondary faults.
