In 1961, a series of trials were made by McKechnie Bros of Widnes on Deer Hills, the fellside to the west of Potts Gill, and showed promising quantities of baryte in lodes beyond the abandoned west end of Old Potts Gill mine. Cross-cuts were driven [NY 310365; NY 313365; NY 314363 ('Dawson's cross-cut')] and a small amount of ore extracted but the lode was poor and work was soon abandoned.

ⓘ Adamite Formula: Zn2(AsO4)(OH) Habit: globular Colour: emerald green Description: Cooper & Stanley (1990): "Very small quantities of a minutely globular emerald green mineral were recently found on the dump from the cross-cut at [NY31303655] associated with agardite-mixite and aurichalcite. The green mineral gave an x-ray powder pattern near to cuprian adamite (M.P. Cooper Collection; det. BM(NH): XRD)." |
ⓘ 'Agardite' Habit: fibrous sprays Colour: pale green; pale blue Description: Specimens collected by B. Young from the dump of a cross-cut to the Deer Hills baryte lode [NY31303655] show minute pale green sprays (< 0.7mm) on quartz. In addition to Ce, La, and Nd the fibrous crystals contained some Bi. More recently found as minute pale blue fibrous crystals with a mineral near cuprian adamite and aurichalcite (M.P. Cooper Collection; det. BM(NH): XRD). |
ⓘ Agardite-(La) Formula: LaCu6(AsO4)3(OH)6 · 3H2O |
ⓘ Arsenopyrite Formula: FeAsS |
ⓘ Aurichalcite Formula: (Zn,Cu)5(CO3)2(OH)6 Habit: scales and masses Colour: pale turquoise blue Description: From the cross-cut dump at [NY31303655] (M.P. Cooper Collection, det. BM(NH): XRD). |
