Gjøvik Olympiske Fjellhall, Gjøvik, Oppland, Norge
Gjøvik Olympic Cavern Hall was blasted out before the 1994 Olympic Winter Games at Lillehammer. Several beautiful specimens of amethyst, calcite, dolomite and baryte were found here during the blasting. The hall is blasted out of mountain consisting of Precambrian gneisses with bonding. Inside the hall most places are now covered by concrete, but the gneiss can be observed some places. This gneiss is transformed (metamorphic) rock formed at great depth. It has a distinctive appearance with large, oval crystals of feldspar (eyes) in a striped matrix (augen gneiss with large porphyroblasts of feldspar).
