The Sunbeam Mine was an obscure low-grade claim until C.E. Gable, an aggressive Pittsburgh capitalist, bought it in 1903. Although its ore values averaged less than $10 per ton, the Sunbeam became a paying proposition under Gable and by 1909 was the country's best producing mine. The Sunbeam property was built to produce hydroelectric power to run machinery in the Sunbeam's mine and mills. An unpaid mortgage, however, forced the sunbeam property to be sold at a sheriff's auction in 1911, and the Sunbeam, the last major mine in the Yankee Fork closed down.
