A former Fe occurrence/mine in magnetite ore located just South of Sterling Lake. One of the Sterling group of mines. Discovered 1750 and closed about 1902. This mine produced the first iron in New York and contributed iron to the legendary chain strung across the Hudson River at West Point during the revolution to prevent British ships from proceeding further up the river. Owned by the Ramapo Ore Company in later years. Ore body was granular magnetite and was 10 to 30 feet (3.2 to 9.7 meters thick) with a 500 foot long outcrop and length of 230 feet at the bottom of the mine. Workings included a 1,000 foot slope.
