A city first incorporated in 1651, it originally included land that is now the town of Wilton (1802), the eastern part of the town of New Canaan (1801), and the western part of the town of Fairfield (1835).
Geologically, Norwalk is underlain mostly by mixed Ordovician Trap Falls schist and unnamed felsic orthogneiss, with some belts of Ordovician Harrison Gneiss metadiorite near the coast. These rocks are part of the Connecticut Valley Terrane.
