Pico do Fogo is the highest peak of Cape Verde, rising to 2,829 metres (9,281 ft) above sea level. It is an active stratovolcano lying on the island of Fogo. The main cone last erupted in 1675, causing mass emigration from the island. A subsidiary vent erupted in 1995. The only deadly eruption was in 1847 when earthquakes killed several people.
Summary of Pereira da Silva & Figueiredo:
Systematic mineralogical studies by X-ray diffraction and chemical characterization using a photon microprobe were carried out on incrustations and sublimates of Fogo Island volcano in Cape Verde since the 1995 eruption.
Beyond sulphur, KCl (sylvite), Ca-sulphates (gypsum and anhydrite), and alum are dominant in Pico Pequeno materials, while highly hydrated Al,Mg-sulphates are the main components of recent sublimates at the summit (Pico Grande). These data are considered a chemical fingerprint of the actual magma degasification process. The last eruption of the Fogo volcano, in the Cape Verde Archipelago, occurred in 2014–2015.
