This power plant was built in the late 1960s on a terrace along the NE side of the Connecticut River. During construction, a bedrock knob and slope were blasted to make way for the reactor containment dome and turbine buildings and the rock rubble was spread out to the NW of the knob to fill a wetland that later became the parking lot. It was during this period that collecting was done, but most exposures are now covered. The plant was built at the foot of the steep slopes that host the SE part of the abandoned Quarry Hill stone quarries and so shares a similar geology of mostly vertically-layered black mica/dark amphibole gneiss with numerous small, cross-cutting pegmatites. The mineralogy is a combination of species found in the gneiss and in the pegmatites and is also similar to that found in the Quarry Hill quarries (though better documented) and in the Arnold and Long Hill dimension stone quarries along the bedrock strike southward across the river in Haddam. The plant was decommissioned by 2007 and the site reclaimed, but access to it and the slopes above it hosting some of the Quarry Hill quarries is still restricted.
