Trenches and pits up to 3 meters deep spread along a 1.6 km long shear zone in Paleozoic Ishigaki Group quartz-mica schists (probably derived originally from bedded chert). Supergene Mn oxides occupy fractures and form films along planes of schistosity. Material left in the deposit now is far too poor to be economically exploited, with 60,000 tons of reserves with an average of 2.5% Mn (range 1.9 to 4.8%).
