Within the Oombulgarri Aboriginal Reserve, approximately 70 kilometres north north-west of the former Oombulgarri Aboriginal Community (Forrest River Mission), in the Collison Range, and west of the junction between the Berkeley and De Lancourt Rivers. The only feasible way to access the site is by helicopter.
A diamond was initially discovered in the creek by the Kalumburu Joint Venture. This consisted of a company called AO, Belgian diamond company Sibeka, Jennings Mining and Northern Mining. When money ran short, CRA was brought in, and the joint venture renamed Ashton. In 1976 the diamond bearing pipe at Pteropus Creek was discovered. The creek was named by the joint venture.
Only a small amount of diamonds have been found at this location. It is a vertical pipe covering 2 Ha, consisting of a breccia of siltstone and sandstone angular fragments in a tuffaceous matrix. 25 diamonds have been recovered from the pipe and nearby creek.
