An iron mine worked from 1903 through 1937 by the Verona Iron Mining Co., shipping 6.6 million tons of ore from three shafts and five levels to 539 feet depth. The property description is NE Sec. 1 T42N-R35W, which is 160 acres between N46º3'56", N46º4'22", W88º37'0", and W88º37'37".

Age: Proterozoic (1600 - 2500 Ma)

Stratigraphic Name: Paint River Group

Description: Includes Stambaugh Formation, Hiawatha Graywacke, Riverton Iron-formation, and Dunn Creek Slate (James and others, 1968). Correlated with lower part of Baraga Group

Comments: Continental margin assemblage (north of Niagara Fault). This unit is labeled "Xpl" on paper map of Sims (1992) but was changed to "Xpi" in digital file of Cannon et al. (1997). Description here is the same description as used for "Xpl" on paper map. Reference: James and others, 1968, Geology and ore deposits of the Iron River-Crystal Falls district, Iron County, Michigan: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 570, 134 p.
