An underground copper mine consisting of one shaft located near Superior Location. The Houghton Exploration and Mine began operations in 1910 when diamond drilling took place to better determine the nature of the Superior Lode. All work stopped during the great strike of 1913, but resumed in 1914. Bteween 1915 and 1917, its only shaft was mined down to the 14th level; however, very little copper was found and the operation was halted in 1917. Copper Range Copper Company purchased the mine shortly after but never reopened the mine. The rock piles and mine site are easy to miss. Once located, copper, quartz, and chalcocite can be collected.
Mineralization is hosted in the Portage Lake Volcanics.
