Mine de Fossey (incl. Prester; Lindengraben), Astenet, Lontzen, District minier de Plombieres-Vieille Montagne, Verviers, Liège Province, Belgique
The Fossey mine.
This mine was part of the “Vieille Montagne Moresnet concession” with headquarters in the management building in Kelmis/La Calamine, the current MVM Museum Vieille Montagne. The ores were transported by horse and cart via the Luise stollen to the wash plant in Kelmis/La Calamine, located on the site of the former Altenberg mine.
The mine is located north of Astenet and 2.6 km SE of Kelmis/La Calamine.
Ancient zinc and lead mine (started in 1878 and abandoned in 1923) exploiting 6 ore bodies (Prester was the 5th ore-body, discovered in 1883 and Lindengraben was the 6th ore-body, discovered in 1900).
This mine worked the same veins as Poppelsberg and Rabotrath.
Levels: -35m, -74m, -110m, -146m and -200m.
Two main shafts, one ventilation shaft and two adits (Luisenstollen and Villain IV adit).
Total production:
143,067 tons of calamine, 22,453 tons of schalenblende and 1,327 tons of galena.
