The Duckmaloi skarn deposit was formed by the contact of dirty limestone (marl?) of Silurian age with the adjacent Duckmaloi granite stock. The skarn is predominately made up of massive garnet. Opaque brown garnet crystals have been found in cavities with epidote. The garnets are zoned, having a composition of grossular in the centre and andradite towards the outside. The crystals generally have a good luster but sometimes can be eroded on the inside leaving a hollow a box work. Shattered garnet embedded in the centre of masses of radiating wollastonite has also been found.
The area underwent small scale mining for calcite and bismuth minerals with limited success.
