The Ivanhoe mine is 16 kilometres north-west of Tennant Creek, 500 metres south of the Warrego Road, between the road and the Alice Springs-Darwin railway line. It is represented by an extensive area of tailings. The mine was developed by Peko Wallsend, between 1965-1972, producing 0.315 Mt of ore yielding 2.9 g/t Au, 3.7% Cu, 29 463 contained Au, and 11 880 contained Cu.
Pyromorphite specimens are occasionally seen from the location.

The deposit is found in the Carraman Formation, within the Warramunga Formation, underlain by acid volcanics and siltstone of the Bernborough Formation, then Whippet sandstone, then greywacke of the Dodson and Gardener units. The middle section of the Carraman Formation contains the Black Eye Member of hematitic shale, porphyry and greywacke, with up to 20% wt magnetite, enclosing the ironstone bodies in the area.

It is a complex structure with three episodes of deformation, resulting in moderate to steep open folds trending west north-west to east south-east, with numerous plunge reversals. There are two main periods of faulting.

Ivanhoe mine sits next to a major syncline, and lies at the intersection of the east-west trending Mary Lane Shear Zone, and a quartz filled north-east trending shear zone.

The ironstone body contains individual shoots of Pb-Zn-Cu rich veins. The source states more silver than gold was produced by the mine, at a ratio of approximately 3:1.
