Northern edge ("Anel Norte") of the Poços de Caldas alkaline complex.
Khibinite-lujavrite bodies.
It is a very peculiar place with a few large spherical boulders of lujavrite, hence the name Pedra Balão (= Ball rocks). Protected in 1996 as a tourist attraction for Poços de Caldas. The presence of these large boulders at fairly high elevation and without any other exposed rocks in the immediate area is not readily explainable. Minerals samples come from the surrounding area — up to 900 m around the main outcrops.
Pedra Balão is the type locality of manganoeudialyte.
Notes on the mineral list:
— Both manganoeudialyte and eudialyte occur in khibinite at this locality; only chemical analysis can distinguish between the two. Manganoeudialyte has only been found at the locality from one specific area (where it usually occurs together with lamprophyllite). Eudialyte, by far the most common mineral from the group in the location, has been found in all kind of rocks, also including light coloured khibinites (light pink eudialyte without lamprophyllite). (Reynaldo Contreira, information 24.08.2014)
— Lamprophyllite from the region may contain some F but far below Fluorlamprophyllite limits.
