The Tongling Mining District is characterized by skarn and stratabound mineralizations. Porphyry-style ore bodies occur only in the deeper parts of a few deposits. Yanshanian magmatism is extensive and includes 76 intrusions in the EW-trending Tongling-Daijiahui magmatic belt. They are composed of pyroxene diorite, diorite, quartz diorite, granodiorite or granite porphyry and mainly form small stocks and dykes. There are two distinct types of skarns in this area: one type occurs within the contact zones between intrusions and carbonate country rocks, the other type is replacing carbonate layers in Carboniferous-Triassic sedimentary strata. In some deposits, banded skarn ore bodies consisting of alternating hornfels and skarn-sulphide layers, representing interlayered mudstone and carbonate protoliths, are also present. In addition, stratabound massive sulphide ore bodies are present in almost all deposits.
