Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Consolidated Stone and Sand Company Quarry; Consolidated Quarry

The Houdaille Quarry, previously known as the Consolidated Quarry or Consolidated Stone and Sand Company Quarry, was located within the current boundaries of Montclair State University, Clove Road. This traprock quarry utilized the basalt of the First Watchung ridge. A student parking lot and a hockey arena are now situated on this former site. Houdaille Industries refered to this quarry as "Montclair Heights". Although it is usually referred to as being in "Upper Montclair", the quarry operation was actually located within Little Falls Township. Confirmation via Montclair State University Police Department.

The quarry was located in a faulted offset of the Orange Mountain (first Watchung) basalt that stood out as a low bluff slightly in front of the main First Watchung ridge. The pit exposed the lower flow unit and the upper few feet of the underlying Passaic formation. Most of the mineralization was in local mounds of breccia that rested on the Passaic mudrocks and were overlain by massive basalt. These breccia mounds probably represent scoriaceous Aa Aa or block lava, flow top material that rolled over the front of the advancing flow and was overridden by the subsequent surge of lava

Note: incorrectly attributed to Upper Montclair in the past.
