Freshly broken trona crust on the surface of Lake Magadi, Kenya, in July 1985. Lake Magadi is a closed basin saline lake on the floor of the Kenya Rift valley. The red color is caused by an algae which, when eaten by flamingos, turns their feathers bright pink. Digitized 1985 transparency.

A block of trona, about 5 inches high, cut from the surface of Lake Magadi, 1986. The block is saturated with brine. Pink and green colors are due to algae. Kenya 1 shilling coin for scale. A similar block was retrieved and is in my collection. Over thirty years later, this sample has begun to dehydrate and crumble.

Freshly broken trona crust on the surface of Lake Magadi, Kenya, in July 1985. Lake Magadi is a closed basin saline lake on the floor of the Kenya Rift valley. The red color is caused by an algae which, when eaten by flamingos, turns their feathers bright pink. Digitized 1985 transparency.

Lake Magadi, Kajiado County, Kenya

A block of trona, about 5 inches high, cut from the surface of Lake Magadi, 1986. The block is saturated with brine. Pink and green colors are due to algae. Kenya 1 shilling coin for scale. A similar block was retrieved and is in my collection. Over thirty years later, this sample has begun to dehydrate and crumble.

On this specimen, lustrous and translucent, light amber colored trona crystals, to 4.3 cm in length, are intergrown on matrix. From a late 1990s find, these are superb for the species.
