3.2 x 2.5 x 1.9 cm. Stilpnomelane is an uncommon layered silicate. Lustrous, platy microcrystals are richly scattered in the vuggy adularia matrix in clusters and isolated crystals. Ex. Howard Belsky Collection. Howard started as a mineral dealer at age 13 in 1972, became a sophisticated dealer and died tragically at age 28 in 1987.

FOV 3.7 x 4.8 mm. This is a stereo child photo. From the same find as the parent but not the same specimen. Didn't seem worth posting separately. This is one of those minerals that is very dark (brown in this case) yet very reflective. Very hard to photograph without getting “blowouts” somewhere. The photo's only useful in stereo. It ...

Stilpnomelane, Quartz, Glaucophane

Blanchard Hill, Skagit County, Washington, USA

Such spherules of stilpnomelane on quartz matrix are typical for the locality. They consist of platy radial crystals. The gray-greenish color is due to glaucophane. Photographed by, and in the collection of Dan Costian.
