3.2 x 2.5 x 1.9 cm. Stilpnomelane is an uncommon layered silicate. Lustrous, platy, microcrystals are richly scattered in the vuggy adularia matrix in clusters and isolated crystals. Ex. Howard Belsky Collection. Howard started as a mineral dealer at age 13 in 1972, became a sophisticated dealer and died tragically at age 28 in 1987.

FOV ~ 4⅓ x 6⅔ mm. This is a stereo child photo. This is essentially the same view as the other stereo child photo. But the lighting is different and in some ways this image works better. But in other ways it's worse. A very tough subject! But stereo does help make sense of this. Updated with a full res image Dec 2012.

Dark brown to black Stilpnomelane Locality on label: Laytonville, California, U.S.A. Received from Willem 'Pink' Leenders on 17 December 2014

A nice, complete thumbnail of stiplomelane on calcite with with some scattered fluorapophyllite-K. The reverse shows a cavity in prehnite where some anhydrite dissolved.

Delicate gold-colored coating of stilpnomelane that looks awful if you try to brush it off, coating quartz crystals in a vein that was amethystine wherever there wasn't a vug!

Such spherules of stilpnomelane on quartz matrix are typical for the locality. They consist of platy radial crystals. The gray-greenish color is due to glaucophane. Photographed by, and in the collection of Dan Costian.

This specimen has a clastic nature w/large milky-white quartz clasts in its center surrounded quartz clasts that are included w/reddish-brown spherulitic stilpnomelane rosettes (≤3 mm in diameter). Dense reddish-brown→black stilpnomelane veins and masses occur throughout the remainder of the specimen. Collected by Bill Hamel in June, 2006.
