Andradite-Grossular Series

Kelso Mine, Lebec, Gorman District, Tehachapi Mountains, Kern County, California, USA

4.1 x 3.9 x 3.4 cm. A large crystal of garnet from Tejon Ranch in Calfornia. The crystal is partial: the back side is missing, but is encrusted with dirt - meaning that the crystal was found this way, and not bashed in getting it out of the ground. It has a complete and good-looking display side, with fine sharp faces.

Unusual large garnet (6 x 5.7 x 4.1 cm; 334 gram) of the andradite-grossular series in pretty good condition: sharp faces and some encrustations proving that the few pits were not due to its excavation. The largest I ever seen. Photographed by, and in the collection of Dan Costian.
