Specimen of petrified gymnosperm from the cretaceous Tuscaloosa Formation. The upper surface is covered with small doubly-terminated quartz crystals. No damage. Overall size of mineral specimen: 10x6x4 cm. Size of individual crystals: 1-3 mm.

This is a miniature-sized specimen of smoky quartz from Wetumpka, Elmore County, Alabama. I acquired this specimen from Jim Haege (Planetary Parts). Unlike smoky quartzes from the Alps or the Rocky Mountains, the smoky color of the quartz specimens from Montgomery and Elmore Counties in Alabama are due to an organic inclusion, possibly lignite. ...
