Felsite porphyry
Highway 220 roadcut, Monterey, Highland County, Virginia, USA
Dense felsite with phenocrysts of sanadine and hornblende. Johnson, et al (1971) describe the phenocrysts as being replaced by harmotome but both types look fresh in this specimen, which is about 4 inches across in this picture. This material contains scattered sub millimeter cavities.
