Orange River, Northern Cape, South Africa

Field of View: 5 mm

In addition to the nice color, the crystals on this small miniature are dominated by very well-formed trisoctahedra with small (001) and other forms. No more precise location than Orange River, South Africa.

An undamaged pocket of unaltered antimony minerals, dominated by clear octahedra of senarmontite and milky valentinite, with stibnite and kermesite.

Lac Nicolet Antimony mine, Saints-Martyrs-Canadiens, Arthabaska RCM, Centre-du-Québec, Québec, Canada

Field of View: 7 mm

Detail of a small cabinet specimen that is large enough to record a transition from unaltered minerals in the interior, to partly oxidized ones at an outer surface. In this pocket, slight oxidation has iridised the kermesite and yellowed the valentinite. There is also a prominent octahedron of senarmontite and some stibnite.

Siglo Veinte Mine, Llallagua, Rafael Bustillo, Potosí, Bolivia

Field of View: 1 cm

There is a small franckeite group on top of the wurtzite. The wurtzite may have been pseudomorphed by sphalerite before becoming iridescent (an oxidized chalcopyrite skin?).

All of the minerals on this specimen are coated with secondary species, but the franckeite clusters are well-formed and make good stereo subjects.

Kajiado County, Kenya

Taken in the early morning while ascending a ridge on the west side of Shompole, very near the Tanzania border, the green-clad escarpment is lit by the rising sun. The pink dust on the lake (north end of Lake Natron) is flamingoes. Digitized 1986 transparency.

Homa Mountain Carbonatite Complex from Lake Victoria

Homa Mountain complex, Homa Bay County, Kenya

Taken on the approach of a slow boat to Kisumu, it's a fine view of the eroded carbonatite volcano. I'm sure this could have been accessed by an adventurous taxi from Kisumu, and I kick myself for not attempting it. Digitized 1986 transparency.
