Rose-like and petal-shaped crystals of gypsum, found in argilitic/clay (like smectite) weathered formations, named vertisol, close to maritime areas.
The weathered formations result from sulfide-bearing units, especially volcaniclastic deposits (Teremba Terrane or Eocene Flysh), basalts (Poya Terrane) and sometimes alluvium deposits.
Studies from Podwojewski (1994, 1995) about sulfur isotopic ratio and distance from the coast, showed that :
- Near the shore, sulfur mainly sourced from seawater (sea spume),
- Inland, sulfur mainly sourced from bedrock (disseminated sulfur).
