Genesis: Genesis: common mineral in medium-grade clayey sediments in regional metamorphism. It can also occur in fine sandstones with clayey matriz and, in carbonated rocks affected by metamorphism. Sometimes it is associated with chloritoid. In the progressive regional metamorphism of pelitic sediments, it forms before kyanite (these minerals commonly occur together), although with the increase in the degree of metamorphism, staurolite is replaced by kyanite and almandine and, less frequently by sillimanite. Under conditions of retrometamorphism it is replaced by "chorite" and "sericite". Because it is a resistant mineral it occurs frequently in clastic sediments (DEER, W. A.; HOWIE, R. A.; ZUSSMAN, J. An introduction to the rock forming minerals, Longmans, Green and Co.: London, 1966, p. 64).
