7RV-V5QFluorite CaF2

Crich Quarry, Crich, Amber Valley, Derbyshire, England, UK

Dimensions: 100 mm x 85 mm x 37 mm
Weight: 312 g

This is a flat, roughly triangular, plate of fluorite crystals from the Crich Quarry, showing an unusual pale yellow colored fluorescent response under short wave UV (254 nm). It is reported that fluorite from this location is typically not fluorescent, but that specimens collected from a limited find in 2008 show this pale yellow/white response under UV. A similar, but brighter, fluorescent response is seen under long wave UV (see other photographs). This fluorite is unique in that it does not show the classic blue fluorescent response commonly seen in most English fluorite specimens.

Pomorzany Mine, Gmina Olkusz, Olkusz Co., Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland

Dimensions: 66 mm x 59 mm x 22 mm
Weight: 119 g

Roughly triangular, cut block of schalenblende with polished surfaces, from the Pomorzany Mine, Olkusz, Poland. The reverse side is natural. Shown here under long wave UV (365 nm), the sphalerite component shows concentric bands of orange fluorescence. The size of this specimen is 66 x 59 x 22 mm.

Dimensions: 99 mm x 62 mm x 8 mm
Weight: 111 g

Elongate slab of schalenblende from the Pomorzany Mine, Olkusz, Poland. In this photograph, taken under long wave UV (365 nm), reniform and concentric bands of fine-grained sphalerite show orange fluorescence. The size of this piece is 99 x 62 mm.
